The county requires building permits to build an ADU; however, fees have decreased by nearly 50% to make it more cost-effective than ever.


In San Diego County you can build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) up to 1,200 sq ft. Originally averaging be $14,000-$16,000, now falling between $6,000-$8,000.

Development impact fees consist of near by schools, water, waste management, and other local resources that make up your community. These fees are collected by the city to maintain public facilities. Development impact fees are also one-time payments and must be paid before collecting building permits. If an ADU is under 750 sq ft, some impact fees may not apply.
